Extrusion strips most of the aroma from the base recipe. Whatever protein went in, what comes out is largely neutral — which is why palatant application is a standard production step in dry food rather than an optional enhancement.
Hydrolysed proteins, insect meal, and therapeutic formulations solve real nutritional problems while often tasting worse. The right palatant keeps those diets acceptable so the dog actually eats what it has been prescribed.

Dogs respond most strongly to meaty and umami profiles — chicken, beef, liver, and lamb lead consistently. Liver in particular punches above its inclusion rate. Fish and dairy notes also perform well, especially in puppy and senior diets. Preference does vary by breed, age, and prior diet, so trialling two or three candidates is worthwhile.
Extrusion applies enough heat and pressure to strip most volatile aroma compounds from the base recipe. A kibble made from good-quality chicken can come out of the die smelling of very little. Palatants are normally applied after extrusion, during the coating stage, to restore the aromatic signal the process removed.
Often, yes — though it is worth separating genuine palatability problems from behavioural or medical ones. Where a dog is refusing a nutritionally sound food it has no clinical reason to avoid, a stronger meaty or liver profile frequently resolves it. Persistent refusal is a matter for a vet, not a formulation change.
This is one of the more valuable applications. Hydrolysed proteins and therapeutic formulations are frequently unpalatable, and a diet the dog refuses delivers no clinical benefit at all. Compatibility does need checking against the specific formulation, so we would work through that with your technical team.
