That changes what a palatant has to do. Ours are built to drive early chick intake, mask bitter actives, and hold consumption steady through heat stress and ration changes.

Chick Starter & Early Intake
The first days set the growth curve for the entire cycle. Anything that gets chicks to the feeder sooner and eating more consistently pays back across the whole flock — which is why starter palatability matters far more than its short duration suggests.
Masking Actives & Byproducts
Medications, coccidiostats, fishmeal, and high-inclusion byproducts all carry notes birds detect and avoid. Covering them protects intake without forcing a reformulation of the ration itself.
Heat Stress & Intake Drop
In hot conditions birds simply eat less, and feed conversion suffers with it. An appealing aroma gives them a reason to return to the feeder during the cooler parts of the day, helping recover some of the lost consumption.

Yes, though differently from mammals. Poultry have relatively few taste buds, so aroma, texture, and appearance carry more of the signal than taste alone. That does not make flavor irrelevant — it means the aromatic component of a palatant does most of the work, and formulations designed for pigs or cattle do not simply transfer across.
Getting chicks to the feeder quickly is one of the highest-return interventions in the whole cycle. An appealing aroma in the starter supports that alongside the physical factors that matter just as much — crumb size, feeder access, lighting, and temperature. Flavor supports those; it does not replace them.
Often, yes, and it is one of the more common requests we receive. Bitter actives can measurably reduce intake at exactly the point the birds most need to keep eating. Effectiveness varies by compound, so we recommend testing the specific active in your own ration rather than assuming a general result.
Grain and cereal notes tend to be the safest base, with savoury and marine profiles useful where fishmeal or byproducts need covering. Herbal and spiced options such as anise, oregano, and thyme also perform well. As with all species, we suggest trialling two or three candidates in your own feed.
