Marine and crustacean profiles lead across most species — krill, shrimp, and shellfish notes replicate natural prey signals. Herbivorous species such as many cichlids and plecos respond better to algae and plant-based profiles. Because a tank often holds both, manufacturers frequently need different attractants across their range rather than one universal option.

Faster recognition means more of the food is taken while it is still in the feeding zone, rather than settling into the substrate. That reduces the residue that breaks down and affects water quality. It supports good feeding practice rather than replacing it — overfeeding will still cloud a tank regardless of how attractive the food is.

Partly. Koi and goldfish are omnivorous and generally less selective than many tropical species, and they respond well to both marine and plant-derived profiles. Pond feeding also brings temperature and seasonal appetite into play, which affects how much attractant strength contributes at different times of year.
